My Early Years

I was born and raised in Iowa, in a small town outside Des Moines. There, I gained a solid moral foundation, and understanding of how to be a good person and treat people well. I earned my bachelor’s degree from Iowa State University with double majors in political science and psychology. During college, I also lettered in varsity track, competed as an Academic All-Big 8 Athlete, and received several scholarships. After completing my undergraduate studies, I moved to the east coast for law school and earned my Juris Doctor (law) degree from Widener University School of Law in Wilmington, Delaware.

My New Jersey Legal Career

I was privileged to begin my legal career at the Delaware Attorney Generals’ Office as an assistant deputy attorney general for the State of Delaware. In only 18 months, I tried 12 jury trials and over 60 non-jury trials. In 2001, I left Delaware and moved to New Jersey. I am currently licensed to practice in the State of New Jersey and the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey.

I have represented employees and citizens of New Jersey against multi-million dollar companies as well as state and local municipal government. In doing so, I have zealously provided representation to clients whose rights have been violated and have been prosecuted across all of the Mark Law Firm’s practice areas.

Because of my Midwest upbringing, I represent my clients with a refreshing feeling of honesty and communication. I do not talk down to my clients or neglect them by disregarding their questions or concerns; instead, I speak to them on a personal level and strive to fully understand their situations. I truly love my job—and I may be one of the few lawyers you will ever meet who says that! I live by the philosophy “do what you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life.”

My Life Outside of Work

I live in a great community in New Jersey, where I am actively involved in welfare efforts that impact my neighbors, family, and friends. I am a member of the Chamber of Commerce, the Rotary club, and my church, and have spent time as a baseball, softball, and soccer coach. I’m also involved in basketball, track, and any other activities in which my kids participate. My wife and I met in high school, went to college together, have been married for over 20 years, and plan to grow old together. We have three beautiful daughters who, as I accept, run my life!

I live and practice law by the theory that if you do right by people, you will do well. This means I take the time to explain to my clients the details of their case, how it is progressing, and the options they may be able to explore. My integrity, high standards, morals, and honesty have made me a caring and skilled attorney who has earned respect from my colleagues as well as my adversaries.

I am here to help you. I will offer an honest and fair evaluation of your case up front and discuss whether I believe your case is worth pursuing or if there is an alternate course of action that may provide you with better closure. In trying to produce the best outcome for your situation, I treat you like I would treat my own family. To me, you are more than a client.

About Michael

Michael was born and raised in a suburban community in Essex County New Jersey. Michael attend Seton Hall University in South Orange, New Jersey where he double majored in History and Philosophy.  Even before enrolling in college, he knew that he wanted to attend law school, having been influenced considerably by the attorneys in his family and because of his early exposure to the practice of law.  Michael graduated Magna Cum Laude with Honors and was awarded the Deans Merit Scholarship at Rutgers Law School in Newark, New Jersey, from which he earned his J.D.

Michael lives in a great town here in New Jersey and remains close with the friends he grew up with.  Michael also remains active in the community at large, where he volunteers at his church as well as the local public school system, where he previously worked as a substitute teacher and prior to that, attended as a student.  Michael also spends time serving as a volunteer tutor through the Achieve Foundation and online programs such as Schools on Wheels.

Michael believes that all people are entitled to be treated with dignity and always strives to be empathetic towards clients and understand their circumstances.  To that end, he tries to make his services readily available and easily accessible, while presenting clients with all of their potential options, rather than simply advising them one way or the other.  Michael truly enjoys his work as an attorney, enjoys learning the law, and advising others as to its dictates.  Having said that, Michael is always happy to discuss in detail, the law, facts, or legal theory of a particular client’s case and encourages clients to ask questions where these things are unclear to them.

Michael remains an avid reader of history and actively follows current events, as well as domestic and international politics.  Michael’s enduring interest in history, public policy, and US politics has significantly shaped his perspective as a lawyer, and believes that attorneys play a crucial role in our system by advocating for the interests of all clients, whether people or businesses owners and all must be held accountable.  It is both a pleasure and privilege to be an attorney in the process of the law.

ABOUT SEAN

Sean Govlick was born and raised in Kinnelon, a suburban community in Morris County, New Jersey. Sean attended Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, where he studied political science and American history and was active in multiple service clubs. Eager to start his legal career, Sean graduated from Ohio State after only three years and, in 2017, began attending Rutgers Law School on an academic scholarship. There, Sean embraced a diverse range of interests, including criminal and Constitutional law, while honing his litigation skills with an after-school internship at the Mark Law Firm.

Sean now lives in Union, New Jersey, connecting him to the communities that surround our firm. In his free time, Sean pursues several interests. He loves spending time in the outdoors and enjoying NFL games, and he writes amateur reviews of music and movies—with Bob Dylan and Stanley Kubrick among his favorites.

Sean’s passion for plaintiff’s employment law lies in his desire to address many of the inequities that exist in today’s employee-employer relationships. He seeks to eliminate practices such as unilateral control of wages and hours, purposeless denial of accommodations that help employees do their jobs better and keeping employees in the dark regarding their rights. Sean believes that every client’s struggle is part of a larger cause in fighting these inequities.

Sean closely follows state and domestic politics as well as the legal industry. Sean’s ever-expanding wealth of knowledge helps ensure his clients get the most up-to-date and persuasive legal authority behind their cases.
