My Early Years
I was born and raised in Iowa, in a small town outside Des Moines. There, I learned a good moral foundation — how to be a solid person and treat people right! I earned my Bachelor’s Degree from Iowa State University with double majors in Political Science and Psychology. At Iowa State I also lettered in varsity track, competed as an Academic All-Big 8 Athlete, and won scholarships. After completing my undergraduate studies, I moved to the east coast for law school. I earned my Juris Doctor (law) degree from Widener University School of Law in Wilmington, Delaware.
I was privileged to begin my legal career at the United States Department of Justice as an Assistant Deputy Attorney General for the State of Delaware. In only 18 months, I tried 12 jury trials and over 60 non-jury trials. In 2001 I left Delaware and moved to New Jersey. I am currently licensed to practice in the State of New Jersey and the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey.
My New Jersey Legal Career
I started my career in New Jersey working at defense firms, which allowed me to learn the law as it applies to employers and defendants. These experiences provided me with real insight on how to represent clients and how not to represent my clients that I keep with me in my current practice.
I have represented employees and citizens of this state against multi-million dollar companies, as well as state and local municipal government. In doing so, I have zealously provided representation to clients whose rights have been violated, and have prosecuted all types of matters, including
- New Jersey Civil Rights violations, 42 U.S.C. § 1983 and 1985
- Employment-related claims, including claims under the New Jersey Law Against Discrimination (LAD), Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA), Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), wage and hour and prevailing wage violations, Conscientious Employee Protection Act (CEPA), wrongful termination, breach of contract, defamation and infliction of emotional distress
- Representation of clients who have been injured on the job in workers’ compensation proceedings
- Residential real estate closings (buyer & sellers), condominium representation, landlord tenant disputes
- Collections matters
- Municipal court traffic and DWI matters
- Wills and trusts
- Small business formation
- Personal injury cases, including slip-and-fall, auto accidents, animal attacks, intentional assaults, and more.
I was born in the Midwest, and I bring to my representation a refreshing feel of honesty and communication. I do not talk down to my clients, or neglect them by disregarding their questions or concerns; instead, I try to speak to them as one human being should do to another. I truly love my job — I may be one of the few attorneys you will ever meet who says that! I live by the philosophy: “Love what you do, and you’ll never work a day in your life.”
Who I Am
I live in a great community here in New Jersey where I am actively involved in the welfare of the community, the people and my family and friends. I am a member of the Chamber of Commerce, the Rotary club, and my church. I’ve coached baseball, softball, and soccer. I’m involved with gymnastics, cheerleading and anything else in which my kids become involved. My wife and I met in high school, went to college together, have been married over 20 years, and plan to grow old together. We have three beautiful daughters who, as I accept, run my life!
I live and practice law by the theory that if you “do right by people you will do well.” I explain in detail to my clients what is going on and how the case is progressing, and I give options. I have integrity, high standards, morals and honesty. I am a caring and skilled attorney who has earned respect from my colleagues as well as my adversaries.
I am here to help. I will offer an honest and fair evaluation of your case right up front. I will tell you, honestly, if I believe your case is worth pursuing or if there is an alternative to a lawsuit which may provide you with closure in your situation. I treat you like I would treat my own grandfather, my mother, my wife and my children. To me, you are more than a client.
